North Zone

It is located in the north of the country and includes part of the Atlantic slope of the Central and Tilaran mountain range, the plains of San Carlos and Los Chiles, as well the Guanacaste Mountain Range where is located the Rincon de la Vieja, Orosi, Miravalles and Tenorio Volcanoes.

It has been characterized for being an agricultural and cattle raise region. Among the plantations that can be found in the area are traditional products as yucca, orange and pineapple which are exported to several countries around the world.   

It also has really beautiful attractions as the famous Arenal Volcano, Arenal Lake, hot springs, Caño Negro Wildlife refuge, Sarapiquí, which has and extensive international recognition by the inheritance of 40 years of investigation that has been carried out by biological research station La Selva.

 Besides you can find rivers as Sarapiquí and Toro River to practice water activities as rafting.  It is also important to mention that great part of the rain forest protected that exists in Costa Rica is located in this region

VOLCAN ARENAL

 

The end of inactivity for Arenal Volcano occurred on July 29th, 1968, at 7:30 a.m., when an enormous eruption awakened this sleeping giant. Since then, Arenal Volcano has become a must see for everyone who visits the wonders of Costa Rica.  Today, this fierce fiery flame still surprises visitors and residents with sudden eruptions of lava and stone.

Its almost perfect conical shape and artifical Arenal Lake with its long passages was built in the 70’s, and now it makes a setting for one of the most beautiful  in this part of paradise.

Here you will witness the unique splendor of the impressive eruptions that have occurred day and night for more than thirty years.  Also, there is a magnificent rain forest that surrounds this testiment to Nature’s marvels.

Arenal volcano is one of the five most active volcanoes in the world at an elevation of 1657 meters above sea level.

CAÑO NEGRO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

 

This wildlife refuge is located close to Nicaraguan border and is formed mainly by wetlands, with Caño Negro Lake being one of the most important. During the dry season (December-March) the water level on most trips begins at Frio River, where you travel on a boat through a series of canals the surrounds the wildlife refuge. By birders, it is considered one of the best places for observing birds on the continent. Also, it is possible to experience a wide variety of wildlife such as caimans, monkeys, bats, and sloths.

LA SELVA BIOLOGICAL STATION

 

La Selva Biological Station is one of the most important places for ecology research in Costa Rica and in the tropics worldwide. The forest is surrounded on the west, east, and north by pastures and farms, but in the south is adjacent to the famous Braulio Carrillo National Park. The Station is a center for biological research and is now owned and operated by the Tropical Studies Organization (OTS).  It was originally founded by the farsighted tropical forester, Dr. Leslie Holdridge in 1953.

La Selva Biological Station has a natural reserve that protects approximately 1,614 hectares of primary rain forest.  It includes 1,850 species of plants, 350 species of trees, 448 species of birds and approximately 500 species of ants.A must see for the nature lover.
